Photo Guidelines for Native Stock Applications

Standardized photographs allow the BCOA Board and membership to evaluate each native stock submission before voting. These photographs also become a permanent part of the AKC studbook record when the dog is approved for registration.

Required Photos

  • Three color photographs: full front, full right side, and full left side.
  • Each photo must show the full body: tip of nose to point of buttocks, bottom of feet to tip of ears.
  • Printed on glossy photo paper at 8" x 10" (20.3cm x 25.4cm). Home or office printers are not acceptable.
  • If the applicant has sired or whelped a litter, include one 8 x 10 showing all offspring.
  • Up to four additional photos may be submitted (moving shots, other angles) plus an optional short video for the website.

Photo Requirements

  • Do not cut off any part of the body, including ear tips, toenails, or portions of the tail.
  • If posed or stacked, at least one photo must show the tail naturally without a handler holding it.
  • At least one photo must show the feet clearly on a hard surface so foot quality and color markings are visible.
  • The dog should fill about 75% of the frame. Leave at least one inch (2.5cm) around the dog on all sides.
  • No moving shots for the three required photos.
  • May be taken indoors or outdoors. No objects blocking a full view of the dog.

Digital Image Specs

  • Set your camera to its highest resolution.
  • Minimum 300 dpi at 8 x 10 for print reproduction.
  • JPEG or TIFF format. Do not alter or manipulate the image.
  • Digital files are useful for committee review but do not replace the required glossy prints.

Tips

  • An attractive, non-distracting background helps the dog look its best.
  • Sharp, clear pictures with good contrast reproduce better in print.
  • If you are unsure about size, quality, or suitability of your photos, send them to the Native Stock Committee chair for review before your final submission.

Examples

Photos from past imports showing what works and what does not.

Avongara Elly: acceptable submission photo

Acceptable. Hard surface shows foot quality and color. Stacked, natural tail carriage, one-inch spacing around the subject, non-distracting background. (Avongara Elly)

Kiki of Cryon: unacceptable submission photo

Not acceptable. Black and white, a pup blocks the view, image is blurry, rear feet are cropped. (Kiki of Cryon)

Avongara N'Gondi: acceptable with caveats

Acceptable if another submitted photo shows all four feet clearly. (Avongara N'Gondi)

Avongara Nabodio: acceptable with caveats

Acceptable, though soft sand makes the feet appear more splayed than they may be. (Avongara Nabodio)

Avongara K'Posi: front feet cut off

Not acceptable. Front feet are cut off. Pay close attention to ears, toes, and tail to ensure the full one-inch border. (Avongara K'Posi)

Avongara Renzi: acceptable with caveats

Acceptable if another submitted photo clearly shows the feet. One-inch border is maintained. (Avongara Renzi)

Unacceptable: dog too small in frame and moving

Not acceptable. Subject is less than 75% of the frame and is moving. Required photos must show the dog stacked or standing naturally.
