The basenji is an ancient hunting hound from central Africa, known as the barkless dog. Small to medium, 16 to 17 inches at the shoulder, 22 to 24 pounds. Sleek short coat, erect ears, wrinkled forehead, tightly curled tail. They don't actually bark. They yodel, chortle, and scream. Clean and fastidious, catlike in their grooming. Energetic, smart, prey-driven, and stubborn enough to outwit you. Aloof with strangers. Most live thirteen or fourteen years.
