Kindu

"Kindu" - "Congo" originally

These dogs were imported with a shipment of baby gorillas. Four Basenjis arrived but two were lost sight of. The two who became Kindu and Kasenyi were exhibited "For Exhibition Only" at the Westminster Kennel Club show in 1942. Being a rather different type than the Americans were used to, they were not well accepted. Finally Mrs. Taaffe purchased and renamed them. It is recorded that Kindu was shown four times in California winning best of breed each time and once in 1945 placing second in the hound group. Mr. Gilkey of Merrill Wisconsin gave this description in Veronica Tudor-Williams' 1976 book: "I saw Kindu..., he was a small dog, only about fourteen inches tall, he was short-coupled with a tightly curled tail. I always said he looked as though someone had taken him after he was made and squeezed him up, tail and all. Of his offspring only one, Kan Du, had the same build..."

Offspring. Males: Kindu of How-Gert and Bombo of Kin-Gay - Female: Baria of Kin-Gay. The male Bombo of Kin-Gay was registered as "black" but may have been a tri color as the terms were interchanged in those days.

Offspring. This was the first registered litter for these two although it is thought there were two other litters which were not registered. Males: Kinsuto, Kintoto, Kindulo and Am. Ch. Kingolo - Female: Kasenyo. Kindulo was bred from in Hawaii. Kingolo was bred to Kasenyo with seven puppies resulting. A number of these where shown to their championships. Kingolo was eventually exported to Ireland. Mr. and Mrs. Williams, Ireland, provided this description in Veronica Tudor-Williams 1976 book: "Kingolo is a very sound dog, with excellent hindquarters and a tight double curl tail. Although he is eight years old, he still retains his fine head and expression and has no tendency to cheekiness. His eye is very dark, he has a coal black nose and a superfine coat of a lovely deep red; his legs and feet are good, and so is his temperament. To be critical, his faults are that he could be smaller cast in head and body, with a more level topline, and his 'Chelsea bun' of a tail would be perfect if it were set a little higher."

Offspring. The only recorded result of this litter was Akamai of Koko Crater. Akamai was the sire and great-grandsire of the first all-breed best in show winner in the United States, Philo's Blaze of Koko Crater.
